Introduction
Even if it pains us to say it, your skincare routine
may be harming you. SPF, aggressive exfoliation, and everything else you do or don't do add up to a lot of damage that you could do without. To
help you identify the most common skincare mistakes and get back on track,
we've put together a list of top dermatologists' advice on how to avoid
them.
Skin Sin #1: Over-exfoliation
“A common skincare mistake I see in my patients is over-exfoliation,” says board-certified dermatologist Lily Adelzadeh. Manhattan-based Dermatologist
Dr. Suzanne Friedler agrees.
When it comes to skincare, people tend to think that more is better, but that's not the case at all. You can actually cause microscopic tears in your skin if you use a lot of scrubs and exfoliators on your skin. rough
cleansing routines can cause discoloration and uneven skin if you have Mediterranean or dark-skinned skin.
Dr. Adelzadeh prefers a chemical exfoliant to scrubs, even though scrubs can be safe for the skin. Chemical exfoliants remove old skin to allow new skin to grow and unclog pores, according to the manufacturer's website.
Anti-aging benefits from retinoids include collagen stimulation. " Only use it once or twice a week if you have normal skin.
Skin Sin #2: Skimping on SPF
SPF was ignored because, let's face it, you've been wearing a mask for 15
months. According to Dr. Friedler, many people believed that because they were wearing their masks, they didn't need sunscreen. That's a mistake, she says, because SPF isn't needed in the winter or on cloudy or rainy days.
For example, "my cheeks showed sun damage when my mask was open in the
winter" and "my ears were damaged when my mask wasn't on," Friedler
explains, noting her own personal experience with sun damage showing up in
places where her mask wasn't covering.
Skin sin #3: Skipping the wash off before you work out
A workout's heat dilates our pores, says Friedler. Makeup can penetrate your skin and cause irritation and breakouts if you work out with it on.
"Start your workout with really clean skin," advises Dr. Friedler to avoid this common skincare mistake. Before exercising, use a cleanser
on your face, so you can start with a clean slate."
