The results from almost 40 weight loss trials carried out over 10 years of overweight or obese people were analyzed by researchers from Stanford University and almost 70% of the types of digital self-monitoring were observed. At the end of the study, there were successful weight losses of over 70 percent of dieters who used digital self-monitoring technology to lose weight. Web sites (66%), followed by apps (33%), wearable (11%), electronics (12%) and text messaging were the most common technology used in weight loss (12 percent ).

“The increased self-monitoring of behavioral interventions by way of digital health is connected with increased weight loss,” the study concludes. “This association held no matter which domains were monitored by itself or which digital methods it used.”

The study also observes that “in digital rather than on paper, engagement rates were higher.”

However, there is a warning. The success of weight loss in digital self-monitoring in the short term has been most successful. Those who have successfully followed up and recorded their progress in less than a year lost their weight with a success of 84 percent. Those with only 47 percent success over a period of more than one year. “The long duration of the intervention has tempered this relationship,” the research explains, “suggesting that weight loss self-monitoring may be less effective over time because of a decreasing level of engagement, or because weight loss rates are slow despite similar engagement levels.”
